What should you prepare?

HR interviews often explore motivation, communication and how you work with others. Read the job description and choose three true examples from work, study, volunteering or a personal project. Match each example to a skill the role needs. You do not need a long employment history to explain a useful contribution.

Tell me about yourself

Use a short present–past–next structure: what you do now, one relevant experience, and why this opportunity fits. Avoid reciting your entire CV. Fictional example: “I recently completed a business degree. During a student event, I coordinated registrations and answered attendee questions. I enjoyed resolving problems and keeping accurate records, and I want to develop those skills in an HR support role.” Replace this with your own experience.

Why do you want this role?

Identify a real responsibility in the vacancy and explain how your experience connects to it. “I need a job” explains your situation but gives little evidence of fit. A stronger answer names a task you want to do, explains why, and supports it with a relevant example. Do not claim knowledge of a company you have not researched.

Describe a disagreement you handled

Explain the situation, your responsibility, the action you took and the result. Focus on how you listened, clarified the issue and agreed a next step. Avoid blaming the other person or presenting yourself as someone who never disagrees. If the issue remained unresolved, explain what you learned and what you would change.

What is a weakness you are improving?

Choose a genuine, manageable development area. Describe the steps you are taking and evidence of progress. For example, if you struggle to prioritise competing requests, explain how you now clarify deadlines and review your task list. Avoid claiming a strength is a weakness or inventing a perfect result.

Practise and review

Write answers to these questions, then read them aloud. Check whether each answer addresses the question, gives evidence and clearly states your contribution. Shorten unnecessary background.
