IT and cloud interview preparation: troubleshooting questions

Prepare for IT and cloud interviews with structured troubleshooting, incident communication and recovery examples.

Prepare decisions as well as definitions

Technical interviews may ask both what a technology does and how you would use it in an incident. Prepare examples of troubleshooting, automation and a trade-off you made. State the environment and constraints before proposing a solution. If you have only lab experience, label it clearly rather than describing it as a production system.

A service is unavailable. What do you check first?

Clarify the scope: which users, which locations, when the failure began and whether a recent change coincided with it. Check monitoring and the service’s dependencies. Form a hypothesis, choose a safe test and update it from the evidence. Avoid listing random commands without explaining what each check would establish.

Tell me about an incident you handled

Describe the impact, your role, the evidence you gathered and the recovery action. Explain how you verified that service was restored and what follow-up work remained. Fictional lab example: “After changing a security rule, I could no longer reach my test application. I compared the rule with the last working configuration, restored the required access and checked the endpoint again. I added a connectivity check to my deployment checklist.”

How would you discuss backup and recovery?

Begin with the business requirements: acceptable data loss and acceptable recovery time. Explain how you would choose and test a recovery approach against those requirements. A successful backup job alone does not demonstrate that restoration meets the target. If you have not performed a restore test, say so and explain how you would validate it.

Describe an automation improvement

Explain the repetitive task, the risk of manual error and the checks you added. Include how you handled failures and protected credentials. Use measured results when available; otherwise describe an observable outcome. Do not claim time savings you have not measured or imply that automation removes the need for review.

Review your answer before practising

A clear answer connects an observation to a hypothesis, an action and a verification step. State assumptions, mention alternatives and explain why you chose one. Use Mostaed’s IT & Cloud category for practice. AI feedback can help improve your explanation, but validate technical details against the relevant vendor documentation.
